Patients present to EDs for missed methadone doses or may be in the ED for an unrelated concern during the time of a scheduled OTP appointment. Since methadone dispensing information for opioid use disorder (OUD) is not available via the PDMP, the process of confirming dosage can be lengthy and burdensome for EDs, and some choose not to provide patients with their medication.* In addition, there are often no standard processes for communication between EDs and OTPs when patients request or receive methadone in the ED. This document is meant to support EDs and OTPs in providing best practice care for these patients.
